Randy Colosky: Infrastructure

SAN FRANCISCO — K. Imperial Fine Art is pleased to announce Infrastructure, a brand new body of work—sculptures and etchings—by Bay Area conceptual artist Randy Colosky. For Infrastructure, Randy investigates the industrial landscape of his New Jersey youth and considers the formal concept of deconstruction within the biblical story of the Tower of Babel.
Informed by science and philosophy and imbued with a sensitive wit and humor, Colosky’s practice is both conceptual and process-driven. He is known for his drawings and highly crafted sculptures that explore themes of repetition, tension, transformation and containment. Removing the functional from industrial and commonplace materials, the resulting pieces are clever and provocative. For this new body of work, an ambitious departure, Colosky utilizes the ubiquitous manufacturing process of lost wax casting for bronze and glass. The sculptures are shaped from pre-made wax gates and sprues into a single use wax pattern that is used to create the ceramic negative, before the second positive—the actual bronze sculpture emerges. Colosky describes the process of casting (constructing and deconstructing) as the content for the works:
“There is an immediacy and malleability that is inherent in constructing wax pieces. In the process of assembling these wax patterns I discovered how these basic shapes could be pulled and joined in ways that emulate scrap pieces of cable or how sticks of twisted wax bar could show gracefulness. Or, how there is an inherent randomness in the geometry of how a landscape is created. These pieces could be structures under construction or in the process of coming apart. The glass pieces in particular reference the story of the Tower Of Babel, in which, God’s children (united from many different tribes and speaking the same language) have perfected their capacity to do great things, God then decides that his children should have obstacles to overcome and confounds their language so they can not finish the building of the tower.”
This new body of work explores many of the same poetic and meditative concepts that his other work draws from: tension, structure, materiality, contradiction and transformation. The etchings included in the exhibition, made during Colosky’s recent residency at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, also explore non-rectilinear shapes, distorted structure, unpredictability and controlled chaos.
Randy Colosky was born in 1965 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He completed a Bachelor’s in Fine Art in ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1987. Recent solo exhibitions include the Museum of Craft and Folk Art-San Francisco, Ampersand International Arts and Hijinks Gallery as well as group exhibitions at Kala Art Institute, Southern Exposure, The Lab and Kavi Gupta Gallery in Chicago. His work will also be featured at the San Francisco Art Commission Gallery in August.
K Imperial Fine Art is located at 49 Geary Street on the 4th floor. The artist reception for Infrastructure will be held on Saturday, August 4th from 3 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. The gallery is open on Wednesday – Friday 11 am – 6 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
