I was very excited this week to unpack 2 lovely new bronze and silverpoint paintings from artist Susan Schwalb, just in from her studio in Manhattan. These two works, Interlunar Vibrations IX and Interlunar Vibrations X are very exquisite geometric abstractions, that allude to horizon line or a sea-scape at dusk. Susan made these last year while at residence in Siena, Italy.
Of her process, Susan says:
“I use the classical Renaissance technique of silverpoint and metalpoint in a way which challenges the traditional concepts. My work is abstract and my handling of the medium has become increasingly bold. The paintings focus on color and the silverpoint drawing becomes an element of structure; in these works on wood panels, drawing and painting are fused. I apply several layers of paint, using different colors, after which I draw with the metalpoint. Then I erase part of the surface with sandpaper to expose the paint underneath. Often I add additional paint and drawing to intensify the layered effect. The paintings seem to float on the wall, and a luminosity begins to emerge from somewhere in the interior, at times creating an aura of reflected light, at times appearing to evoke memories or afterimages.”
For our friends in New York, Susan is currently in a group show at the International Print Center through July 27th.
Interlunar Vibrations IX and Interlunar Vibrations X (pictured above) are available for viewing in the gallery or by appointment. See more work by Susan on our website.
