Moving Objects
May 3 – June 2, 2012
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 3rd 5:30-7:30pm
K. Imperial Fine Art in San Francisco is pleased to announce Moving Objects, an exhibit of new work by Oakland-based artist Amy Sollins.
Amy Sollins’s mixed media drawings reveal a whimsical nostalgia for sacred and personal artifacts. Uprooted from the context of her life, the artifacts are drawn on large white pieces of paper, floating and swimming, disregarding the natural laws of gravity. She subjectively curates the drawn objects from her personal mythology and that of her heritage. The result is a surreal narrative, where scale and context are less relevant than emotive charge, and the everyday, inanimate object is poetry.
Sollins was known earlier in her career for her intricate abstract paintings, and now for the large charcoal drawings of her possessions. With this new body of work, Sollins combines the current and past media into a magical melange of stuff. Sollins renders the charcoal with a soft touch, letting the dust fall on the paper, creating ethereal shadows. Incorporating watercolor, pastel and sometimes a linocut, with this new show, Moving Objects, Sollins stacks and categorizes the archeology of her own life.
A Baltimore native, Amy Sollins earned her M.F.A. from the California College of Arts in Oakland and her B.F.A. from Syracuse University. Her work has been exhibited at the Seattle Art Museum, Oakland Museum of California, San Jose Museum of Art, Fresno Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Artists Gallery, Richmond Art Center and numerous galleries.
K Imperial Fine Art is located at 49 Geary Street on the 4th floor. The artist reception for Moving Objects will be held on Thursday, May 3 from 5 – 7 p.m.
