CHRIS SICAT

Artist Biography

Chris Sícat was a long time Los Angeles artist and curator before relocating to the Bay Area. Sícat graduated from Otis/Parsons School of Design (B.F.A.) and the New York Academy of Arts (M.F.A. cum laude). Sícat’s recent sculptures investigate the natural environment as a platform for process and performance based art making. Sícat obsessively and meticulously covers pieces of preserved redwood with graphite using hundreds and or thousands of pencils per each piece. Applying several layers of graphite per sculpture, the redwood develops a silver sheen ultimately giving the piece of red wood a new life.

Sícat has exhibited his works at the de Saisset Museum, Santa Clara, CA, Intramuros Museum in Manila, Philippines, Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA, Palo Alto Art Center, Southern Exposure, and Intersection for the Arts in San Francisco Bay Area. Sícat also directed the infamous Hatch Gallery, which hosted the controversial “Rejection Show” that was highlighted on the BBC The World.
