Artist Biography
Erika Mahr (b. 1982, New York) received her BFA from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, MFA from Hunter College, New York, NY, and currently lives and works in the Hudson Valley, NY. Mahr’s investigation of form, technique, and abstraction has been a continuous component to her practice for nearly a decade. Within her work is an underlying sense of discipline and confidence that Mahr utilizes to create unique works within beautifully established perimeters and principals. The evolution of Mahr’s practice flows from early sculptures, to painting, works on paper, and now combines of these forms in mixed media.
Mahr’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States including Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, New York, NY, Brooklyn, NY, Whiteplains, NY, Chelsea, NY, Holmes, NY, New Haven, CT, Peterborough, NH, Gainesville, FL, Sarasota, FL, Provincetown, MA, Newark, NJ, Loveladies, NJ, Colorado State University, and Eastern Michigan University. She has given lectures at the Harn Museum of Art, Gainesville, FL; received awards such as the New York Foundation of the Arts Grant, Hunter College Tony Smith Award; and has been granted residencies at Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency, Stony Brook University, NY, and the Drawing Center Viewing Program, New York, NY. Mahr’s work has been published in Cybernetics & Human Knowing, Visual Arts Source, Arte Fuse, New Haven Register, Yale Daily News, and Astoria Times to name a few.
