Erin Vincent

Artist Biography

Erin Vincent (b. 1977, Canada) is a Toronto based-artist whose work draws on a variety of repetitive and labour intensive processes and materials.  Things have always fascinated Vincent; attracted to the abject and discarded she de-categorizes them and removes established hierarchies. Erin completed her MFA at York University, focusing on sculpture and installation. She holds her BFA from the University of Waterloo and received her degree in Arts Education from the University of Western Ontario.  Vincent has exhibited her work in Canada, United States and England, with representation by Christie Contemporary (Toronto ON), Muriel Gupien Gallery (NYC), and Karen Imperial Gallery (Palo Alto). Her work is held in Canadian and International collections and she is the recipient of the following grants – 2021 Canadian Council – Research and Creation, 2019 Visual Arts Mid Career – Toronto Arts Council, and a 2016 SSHRC.

Artist Statement

Using everyday materials in unconventional ways, Erin Vincent is interested in converting labour into wonder to resonate at the level of the uncanny. Repetitive gestures yield new textures as continuous fields – pins, paper, wood, bristles – surfaces that are foreign yet familiar, and beg the proof of touch.

Vincent’s artistic practice explores issues pertaining to process, time, accessibility, perception, and identity; attempting to create works that are elaborate and intricate, executed with persistence and dedication. Through the reorganization of man-made materials she innovates new textures, the base materials index as familiar but their adapted use confuses that familiarity as they are transformed into organic inspired surfaces and forms
