Harkening Dusk and Twilight: Chris Sicat and Shingo Francis — October 1 – 31, 2015

K. Imperial Fine Art is pleased to present, Harkening Dusk and Twilight, a two-person exhibition featuring redwood and graphite sculptures by Chris Sicat and vibrant oil paintings by Shingo Francis. Francis and Sicat’s work deals with their individual concern of how light is reflected in their work. The relationship of light on the surface of both works is subtle which brings to (harkens) mind the quality of light during dusk and twilight.

Both Francis and Sicat practices are very labor intensive utilizing a process of multiple layers to achieve a specific surface through the application of either graphite or paint. Harkening Dusk and Twilight will be on view from October 1st – 31st with a reception for the artists Thursday, October 1st from 5:30 – 7pm.  Sicat and Francis will both be in attendance.

Francis’s paintings are abstract and are concerned with the layering of paint to the surface. The overall monochrome image at the center of the canvas with a horizontal line cutting through at the bottom breaks the monochromatic plane breaking the plane of the canvas. The bottom and top of the canvas is revealed by the thinning of painting with apparent drips towards the bottom revealing aspects of process.

Sicat obsessively and meticulously covers pieces of preserved redwood with graphite using hundreds and or thousands of pencils per each piece. Applying several layers of graphite per sculpture, the redwood develops a silver sheen ultimately giving the piece of red wood a new life.

The collaboration for Sicat and Francis started in Los Angeles, California. Since then, both artists have lived and exhibited in various places. Although the artists work in different mediums (sculpture and painting) there is similar concern and attention to detail in regards to the monochrome and texture.

Harkening Dusk and Twilight will be on view for the month of October.
