Lorene Anderson: Whirligig — September 6 – 30, 2017

K. Imperial Fine Art is pleased to present its second solo show of the work of Lorene Anderson.

Lorene Anderson’s practice is centered around the manipulation of two-dimensional space: math, cosmology, physics and their relationship to biology inspire her work. In this exhibition, Anderson will present new paintings that continue this exploration of movement, turbulence, and gesture, as well as how space folds and moves. “I’m interested in representing things that aren’t still, such as shifting light, air currents, sound waves, water, time.” She utilizes scraping and striping to alternate between negative and positive space. It alters perception and balance while revealing multiple spaces and new layers of information. “Each layer is a reaction or conversation with the previous layer, showing the history of revision, exploration and repetition in the painting. Striping bends space and vibrates the picture plane; there is constant folding and unfolding – a cross-section of layers where some planes are parallel, some intersect.”

Lorene Anderson received her B.F.A. from Miami University of Ohio and her M.F.A. from U.C. Berkeley, where she received the Eisner Award for painting. She has been exhibiting her work in museums and galleries internationally, including the Los Gatos Art Museum, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, and Kyoto Museum & Sakai City Cultural Hall (Japan). She has completed residencies with the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts (New York) and La Port Peinte Center for the Arts (France). Anderson lives and works in Oakland, California.

Whirligig will be on view September 6 – 30, 2017 with a reception for the artist Thursday September 7th 5:30 – 7:30pm.
