Edythe Bresnahan: Recent Works October 1-31st, 2012
Artist Reception: Saturday, October 6th 3-5 pm | Open late on First Thursday, October 4th
K. Imperial Fine Art is pleased to announce Recent Works, an exhibit of new paintings by San Francisco Bay Area artist Edythe Bresnahan. This show, Bresnahan’s first solo exhibit with K. Imperial, will feature work from her ongoing Siena Series.
Bresnahan’s investigations in light, line and design begin with a profound interest in the Italian aesthetic. After a sabbatical in Rome, Bresnahan found the experience had opened a new direction for her art practice. She began to see her paintings as units of design with placement and balance as crucial resonating factors.
Bresnahan’s oil paintings begin with a ground of burnt or raw siena, drawing from the palette of Roman masonry. Near-white hues are achieved after layering many modulating tones. Bresnahan says of her process: “Form and balance are achieved through line. Line can be light and almost invisible, made of graphite and pushed back in space under layers of glazing; or line can invoke deep space, through dark tones and wide dimension, at times with a blue aura emanating from black.”
Bresnahan lives and works in Emeryville. She is the former chair of the art department at Dominican University of California. She received an MA from the University of California at Berkeley, and a BFA from Holy Names College in Oakland. Her work has been shown in numerous galleries and institutions including: the Berkeley Art Center, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Artists Gallery, San Marco Gallery at the Dominican University of California, Triangle Gallery in San Francisco, Stremmel Gallery in Reno, Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, Bank of America World Headquarters in San Francisco and Pro Arts Gallery in Oakland.
K Imperial Fine Art is located at 49 Geary Street on the 4th floor. The artist reception for Recent Work will be held on Saturday, October 6 from 3 – 5 p.m.
