K. Imperial Fine Art is pleased to present its first solo show of the work of Karen Margolis. False Positives will feature intimate, intricate works on paper packed with networks of emotion and connection. Each combines collage, burning, sewing, and almost cellular-level painting, a balance of elimination and reconstruction, damage and mending. The inspiration is inward yet universal.
“Underneath the façade of vibrant colors is an accounting of my interior monologues. Thoughts and feelings are converted into color-coded dots as a means of plotting out the changing landscape of my emotions. Translating meaning into pattern, I weave what is intangible into materiality to create tapestries of the mind’s operations. Brilliant colors belie many darker, less attractive feelings. It is my alchemical process of transmuting negativity into beauty, an antidote and escape from the darkness.” – Karen Margolis
Margolis’s work is exhibited internationally including the Rijswijk Museum in the Netherlands and Salon Zurcher in Paris. Her US exhibitions include Rockland Center for the Arts, The Hunterdon Art Museum, The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, The Parrish Art Museum and the Fine Arts Center of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, and Weatherspoon Art Museum with solo exhibitions at Bridgewater University in Massachusettes and The Delaware Center for Contemporary Art as well as currently exhibiting work in a group show touring the country for 4 years. Margolis recently completed a mosaic public art commission for the MTA Arts in Transit for the 86 Street N line in Brooklyn, NY. She’s won numerous grants and awards including the Pollack-Krasner Foundation grant. Margolis received a BS in Psychology from Colorado State University and a certificate in Microscopy from the New York Microscopical Society. Margolis lives and works in New York City.
False Positives will be on view May 1 – June 1, 2019 with a reception for the artist Thursday, May 2nd 5:30 – 7:30pm.
